Blackwater Community School, Coolidge, AZ: Provide an instructional program that reflects the culture and language
of the community. The school also provides instruction for families of infants
to four years through a center base and home base design. Parents are provided

Options for Youth - Long Beach, Inc., Pasadena, CA: The school uses independent study as a basis; students work on one or
two subjects at a time. All teacher contact is one-on-one.
San Jacinto Valley Academy, San Jacinto, CA: Our school is very responsive to parents and teachers. The focus is
kept on the students and their classroom experience, and a close personal
connection with students and families.
Santa Barbara Charter School, Goleta, CA: Governed as a parent-staff cooperative team. We're a K-8 school with an
elementary program (K-5) and a middle school program (6-8). Our home based
partnership program serves approx. 45 home-schooled students. We emphasize the
arts, academics, etc.
Santiago Middle School, Orange, CA: Required enrollment contract: 12 hours of parent service per family
annually.

Academy of Charter Schools, Denver, CO: Very similar to public schools of 40-50 years ago. ACS offers a
back-to-basics curriculum based on the Core Knowledge sequence in the elementary
grades and a college prep focus at the secondary grades. Conversational Spanish
is taught beginning at first grade.

Sedalia Park Elementary School, Marietta, GA: We don't look very different, but with the waivers we have, we have
more flexibility with budget and are making time to be more reflective
practitioners. Still shaping the course of our charter school.
Greenlawn Charter School, Columbus, KS: Focuses on the three critical basic skills: reading, writing, and
arithmetic. Also character education, integrity, perseverance, caring, etc. No
sex education is taught.
Lawrence Family Development Charter School, Lawrence, MA: Summer school.
Lynn Community Charter School, Lynn, MA: We are the only school we know about that is training all staff,
interested parents and many students in reevaluation counseling or
co-counseling, a form of peer counseling. We are an affiliate of the National
Coalition Building Institute and have a strong focus on welcoming and
celebrating diversity, as well as teaching conflict resolution skills
school-wide.
Academy of Detroit West, Westland, MI: Our global themes provide a monthly infusion of cultural literacy from
each continent to the classroom. Separate district.
Creative Learning Academy of Science, Mathematics and Humanities,
Beaverton, MI: Plan to incorporate more tangible proof of student progress through
technology. Students learn keyboarding, sign language. Presentation stations aid
in instructional delivery.

Downtown Middle School, Winston Salem, NC: Thematic, parent participation, direct community involvement,
standard-based grading. Small class size. All students take band, Spanish, and
P.E everyday. Suites of 60 students are responsible to three core teachers.
Grandfather Academy, Banner Elk, NC: We serve children who are estranged from their families, who have no
sense of safety, no trust of adults. To them we offer small self-contained
classrooms.
Healthy Start Academy, Durham, NC: Staff development, student uniforms, strict discipline, high academic
expectations for all.
The Community Charter School, Charlotte, NC: We use lower ratios (15 to 1), multiage classes with a project-based,
inquiry approach. Connections are made between classroom learning and the larger
community. We are establishing on-going community service relationships in the
city.
