CER Letter to the Editor
JEFFORDS ONLY BACKED STATUS QUO
by Jeanne Allen
Responding to Newsweek's Jonathan Alter's article, "The Odyssey of 'Jeezum Jim,'" June 6, 2001
Editor -- Far from an honest principled champion of good education for all children and independent Vermont thinker, Jeffords has been since his Senate career began a captive of the school employee unions which advocate benefits for adults, not children. The special education program cited in the article as Jefford's last straw before bolting from the Republicans is the most broken federal program that exists, funding an array of adults, with no accountability for results and leaving special needs children and their parents behind.
During his tenure as Senate Education Committee chair, the Senate only backed the most status quo oriented bills despite no evidence of success. He could no longer deliver for the unions, and that not money for the kids was his conundrum.
Sincerely,
Jeanne Allen
President
