"I just saw a copy of Parent Power and would like to added to the
mailing list. I am the director of the UNM Music Prep School for children birth
though sixth grade, so I was especially interested in your articles about music
and children. Thanks for publishing that information! Is it possible to quote
from your articles in our quarterly newsletter to parents? Thank you."

As Director of Public Relations for the Dallas School of Music, Inc., I was thrilled to see you covering music in the latest issue of Parent Power! [Does Music Class Help Children Learn, November, 1999] I especially enjoyed the advice of Sharon Godrick and agree that "a good match between student and teacher is key." [Is Your Child Musically Inclined?] I would go even further in suggesting some guidelines for finding a suitable music educator.
Make sure the environment is conducive to learning! A music store or a home (yours or theirs) may not be the perfect place. Minimize distractions and make sure the student has a chance to see, meet and hear other musicians on their musical journey. Look for degreed music educators rather than "piano teachers". An understanding of the psychology of teaching is as important a factor in your child's success as experience. A qualified educator can determine the best course of action for the aural learner or the visual learner and present material accordingly.
Communicate!! Tell your educator what the child has been interested in, what was difficult and what came easy. Be prepared to help at home with a younger child and demand a written account of every session with clear cut goals and objectives for each week.
Be consistent in attending sessions and make certain the educator adheres to the same weekly schedule. The goal of a well rounded music education (or any education for that matter) should be to instill a sense of self esteem and confidence, not to create another Mozart. Lastly remember, no note or single piece of music ever played or written is more precious than a child.
Keep up the great work!
Respectfully,
Eugene
