Education Reform Hotline

August 13, 1999

Hello and welcome to the Center for Education Reform’s hotline.

A study released by the Fordham Foundation has found that high school students whose teachers have emergency teaching certificates perform about as well in math and science as students whose teachers hold regular teaching credentials.

The study is based on the test scores of a national sample of high school seniors and sophomores, and runs contrary to the assumptions of a Clinton administration proposal to require states to stop issuing emergency teaching certificates as a condition for receiving federal education aid.

Other findings in the report underline the importance of teachers specializing in the subjects they teach. The study concluded that students whose teachers have college degrees in math have scored significantly higher on standardized tests than students whose teachers did not specialize.

So what does all this mean? At the end of the day, regardless of what some bureaucracy says, your kid's math teacher needs to know math.

In Florida next month, September 17-18 is your opportunity to join fellow reformers for Education Reform: A National Conquest, the Education Leaders Council's fourth annual conference for education leaders.

Governor Jeb Bush will highlight the great education reform victories won on behalf of children in the Sunshine State and will discuss some of the struggles that lay ahead in continuing the momentum gained by their victory.

The conference will also give you the opportunity to hear from and interact with state and local leaders from across the country who have successfully championed meaningful change in the education systems in their states and local communities.

Space is limited so register today by calling (800) 521-2118.

As summer winds down parents and children across the country prepare to get back to school. The monthly newsletter Parent Power!, is publishing a special back to school issue this month due out by August 18. If you would like to receive this important issue please call Amanda at 202-822-9000.

Thank you for checking in to the Center for Education Reform’s hotline. For further information call the center directly at 1-800-521-2118. Have a great week!
