Education Reform Hotline

August 20, 1999

Hello and welcome to the Center for Education Reform’s weekly hot-line, this week beginning Friday, August 20.

A 1999 survey by Public Agenda revealed that 84 percent of students said they would do better in school if they knew that potential employers were looking at their transcripts. In response frustrated U.S. companies are joining "Making Academics Count," a campaign that implores companies to review the high school transcripts of applicants as part of the hiring process. They say they want to signal to students early on that slacking on school work can have serious implications when they start looking for work.

Speaking of businesses and education....On August 19th, Ryder System Incorporated dedicated the Ryder Elementary Charter School, the nation's first charter school-in-the-workplace. The ambitious charter school is set to open August 30 for its first school year. Florida Governor Jeb Bush said at the opening ceremonies, "Education of our children is critical to Florida’s future and Ryder is to be commended for its dedication to improving the quality of education.  Ryder Elementary Charter School demonstrates Ryder's commitment to its employees and the community it serves."

The demand for choice is HOT in New Jersey! State education officials received 45 applicants from 12 counties to open new charter schools next year. It's the largest number of applications the state has ever received. Choice is in demand!

        And its demanding:

At a hearing last week in Ohio the usual suspects of voucher opponents urged U.S. District Judge Solomon Oliver Jr. to impose an injunction on the state's four year old program. Oliver will not rule until early next week, his office said Thursday, prompting dozens of calls from anxious parents to state school officials. 4,003 children are relying on the up-to $2,500 voucher to go towards tuition this fall.

We would like to extend kudos and thanks to schools in Miami and in the Bronx, and to the National Heritage Academies, for ordering Parent Power! for their students' parents. Welcome to all our new readers!

Thanks for checking into the Center for Education Reform's hot-line. If you have further questions, or would like to order Parent Power! call our offices directly at 800-521-2118. Have a great week!
