POSITION TITLE: Business Development Director
ORGANIZATION: The Center for Education Reform


The Center for Education Reform is seeking a senior leadership team leader to advance the work critical to its mission- to expand educational opportunities that lead to improved economic outcomes for all Americans, particularly our youth, ensuring that the conditions are ripe for innovation, freedom and flexibility throughout U.S. education.

The Business Development Director reports to and works closely with CER’s leadership team to plan, direct, and execute all aspects of the organization’s new business strategies, fundraising and development activities.

The ideal candidate would enjoy the work to direct, coordinate, and support all of CER business development efforts, including strategy and program development, fundraising activities. He/she directs new business activities, and manages all corporate and philanthropic relationships.

Specifically, the Business Development Director will have accountability for the following areas:


  • Strategic planning – Create and implement the annual development plan and strategy.
  • New Business Development – Manage the ongoing new business opportunities and organizational goals to ensure success.
  • Major gift/donor support – Develop and grow the individual donor base, manage the annual giving campaign and cultivate donors by producing specialized correspondence, preparing letters of acknowledgement, advancing in-person meetings for senior staff and Board members, and creating affinity programs and/or sponsorship opportunities.
  • Development – Manage the researching and writing, and preparation of, persuasive solicitations, proposals, case studies, reports, correspondence, and other development-related communication materials in support of CER’s strategic plan and fundraising goals.
  • Records management/financial reporting – Create and maintain the master giving database to ensure accurate and timely reporting of activity with all existing and prospective donors and funders, including working with the Director of Finance & Administration to maintain accurate accounting of all unrestricted income and its sources. Monitor and report regularly on the results/progress of fundraising efforts. Provide statistical analyses to senior staff and Board.
  • Grants accountability – Manage the timely, accurate, and compelling reporting of results on all grants.

  • Knowledge and understanding of education reform issues is required.
  • Commitment to school choice.
  • Bachelor’s degree, plus at least six years of experience in business development or fundraising and other development functions.
  • Strong writing skills and excellent proofreading skills.
  • Excellent relationship management skills. Comfortable with communicating with donors and cultivating prospective donors.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, other organizations, and the public.
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple responsibilities without constant supervision.
  • Strong knowledge of donor software programs including Charity Engine, Raiser’s Edge and other programs.
  • Strong financial management skills.
  • Familiarity with Constant Contact and other email programs.
  • MS Office, particularly Word, PowerPoint, and Excel as well as other productivity focused tools.



Commensurate with experience, but as the position is high level it would be attractive to most individuals with minimum 5 years’ experience.
