Some school districts switch to 4-day week amid nationwide teacher shortage

WASHINGTON (TND) — The teacher shortage has resulted in some historic changes in the classroom.

Some districts across the nation are now moving to a four-day school week, while others are dropping requirements for teachers. There are now 25 states that have at least one district using a four-day week school schedule.

Researchers from the Rand Corporation collected data from Idaho, New Mexico, and Oklahoma and administrative data from other states found that English and math test scores showed students on the four-day school week have lower scores over time when compared with peers on a five-day schedule.

“The four-day school week is a solution in search of a problem. There is absolutely no reason to be doing it,” said Jeanne Allen with the Center for Education Reform.
