unCommon Construction is a unique workforce development program based in New Orleans, where high school apprentices work alongside industry experts to build homes in their community. These apprentices earn hourly wages and school credit for their work, and they also receive an “Equity Award Scholarship” funded by the project’s revenue. This scholarship helps them pursue further education, industry certifications, or tools for long-term employment.

The organization’s motto is “Building Houses. Building Character.” This philosophy is demonstrated through the work apprentices do, as they not only build homes but also develop essential soft skills such as collaboration, time management, and grit. By working together on construction sites, apprentices from different schools and neighborhoods put aside their differences to focus on their shared goal of rebuilding New Orleans.

One of the most inspiring success stories comes from Hunter, who built six houses with unCommon Construction. He used his Equity Award to become an electrician, completing his trade apprenticeship and eventually turning out as a journeyman. At just 19 years old, Hunter bought his first home and now mentors his own apprentices, proving that hard work and dedication can lead to long-term career success.
Looking ahead, unCommon Construction is expanding its reach. They’re bringing their model to Minneapolis, Louisville, and beyond, and at their New Orleans base, they’ve just broken ground on a new 5,000-square-foot facility. The unCommon Campus will house offices, a workshop, and space for hands-on learning, becoming a hub for the organization’s growth and a symbol of its ongoing commitment to workforce development and community revitalization.
